you can help. Foreign Service professionals abroad and our Civil Service
employees in the U.S. work on challenging issues each day dealing with
foreign policy issues that impact America's economy, food, energy
security, and stability.
There are multiple programs to choose
from depending on your goals and year in school. The U.S. Department of
State even offers a short quiz to help you find the ideal placement.
Two main tracks include:
#1 Career Tracks:
This
program is for students with a minimum of 60 credit hours or greater.
It provides the opportunity to work in U.S. Embassies throughout the
world, as well as in various bureaus located in Washington, D.C. and at
Department offices spread around the United States. It is an unpaid
placement designed to provide substantive experiences in a Foreign
Affairs environment.
#2 Pathway Programs:
These programs are
streamlined developmental programs tailored to promote employment
opportunities for students and recent graduates in the Federal
workforce. Two new programs have been created and the third modified to
create more student friendly programs and open up recruitment. They
include the Internship Program for current students; the Recent
Graduates Program for people who have recently graduated from qualifying
educational institutions or programs (2 years from the date the
graduate completed an academic course of study); and the reinvigorated
Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program for people who obtained an
advanced degree (e.g., graduate or professional degree) within the
preceding two years.
Highlights
1. Have access to continued training and career development programs; a student loan repayment program; health and medical coverage; language training; federal retirement benefits; paid education for dependent children K through 12; and generous paid leave. When serving overseas, we will provide paid housing or an appropriate housing allowance, as well as paid storage of effects back in the United States.2. Some internships are paid and place students in agencies where they can explore Federal careers while completing their education
3. Play an important role in our global society and learn about the inner workings of international diplomacy and foreign policy
4. Use the Diplomats in Residence Location Map to find an advisor to provide guidance and advice for those interested in Department careers they will share insight to help those on the path to Foreign and Civil Service careers, internships, and fellowships
5. Placements are located in over 24 countries from Vietnam, to Egypt, to Canada, and many more
